The Miami suburb of Cutler Bay was incorporated as a city in 2005. It is a middle-class enclave with about 25,000 residents, many of whom make the 30-minute commute to jobs in Miami each day. Like other suburbs in Miami-Dade County, it's served by Miami's police department and schools. It also has a history of being badly damaged in hurricanes, thanks to its position near the coast. Previous to incorporation, the area was known as Cutler Ridge, although the city is located near Biscayne Bay and Biscayne National Park. Both names came from the now-defunct town of Cutler, which was unincorporated during the Great Depression. The new city of Cutler Bay had the dubious distinction of losing its mayor less than a year into his first term, when mayor and former state legislator John Cosgrove died after an emergency appendectomy in South Africa.
