Palmetto Bay is technically a village rather than a city, but as of the 2000 Census, it had a population suitable for a small city of about 24,500 people. It was incorporated fairly recently, in 2002, with land from the unincorporated areas of East Perrine and Cutler. However, it is still served by the Miami-Dade school system and the Miami Police Department. Like many of its neighbors on the coastline south of Miami, Palmetto Bay has residents with some money, many of whom are families with children. The village is about 30 minutes south of Miami and even closer to the University of Miami in Coral Gables, making it a reasonable choice for commuter students or those with jobs at the university. Palmetto Bay was also once home to the corporate headquarters for Burger King, although those offices have moved to an unincorporated area of Miami-Dade County.
